Mills Van and Cross Registration

Cross registration at Berkeley is a very attractive feature of a Mills education but transportation to and from Berkeley campus is a perrenial problem and the major stumbling block to a more effective use of cross-registration; it just takes too long for students to take the van to Berkeley and to get back to Mills to take classes here as well, because the vans run too infrequently and make the journey too slowly.

This is probably a classic example of a situation where it is very easy to compute the cost but much more difficult to calculate the benefit (and the benefit foregone by an inefficient program).  We should work harder on the second half of this equation.  A frictionless cross-registration program could complement enhancements to our instructional program in a manner that provides high leverage.

  1. I think that expanding the Mills van is a great idea! One of the big complaints about Mills is that there's not much going on in the evenings and the weekends and students feel isolated and bored. Not only would an expanded Mills Van offer more academic opportunities, but also more outside life opporutunities.

What do you think? What can you add? How can we turn this into a solid proposal?
