The 2027 Plan

Ultimate goal for 2027: have a tuition free undergraduate program

This emerged in a recent division meeting as the conversation turned to Strategic Planning. It reflects the "sky is the limit" : have Mills College be tuition-free for undergraduate women by 2027. One argument that came out of that idea is that donors would be interested to support one strong idea that would make the College unique.

  1. As a "pie in the sky" goal, I like it, or something like it (a $10K degree for commuters?)

  2. Even if zero tuition does not appear attainable we should probably take seriously recent conversations about the unsustainability of the "high tuition high discount" approach (see, for example, recent Insider Higher Ed article http://bit.ly/11dFWMN) and aim toward productivity gains that reduce the real cost so that tuition can end up at something like half its current level in current dollars over next, say, ten years.

What do you think? What can you add? How can we turn this into a solid proposal?
